if batman killed all of the bad guys in gotham rather than tying them up and leaving them for the police, the quality of life in gotham would be so much better after a few months and crime would f*cking plummet, but on the other hand after a few 10/10 awesome issues the quality of the comics would drop pretty drastically

Same here. Particularly this scene (warning: spoiler). They explain very well here why Batman won't kill Joker. They also cover it in Arkham Origins.
He won't kill because doing so would make him no different from the criminals and villains he fights. Also, by not killing, he sets a good example for the rest of the city, projects a good image for them.
You know though, lately I've been wondering: If Batman allowed himself to kill, do you think he'd have an easier time beating tougher enemies like Bane?
