I suppose they should, but I'm not going to lose any sleep over it.

Well, it's on the inside. It's not on top of it, so it's not a topping.

I don't think I've ever heard them referred to as 'toppings'...

Since they fill the dough, I find the appellation fillings is both descriptive and consistent with other things we refer to as fillings.

I've never seen it put as toppings.

I think they mean when the all the ingredients of a calzone are on top of a pizza, they're called toppings.

I don't know if I'm making sense.

I would assume that is done in a place that sells pizza and also offers calzones that are filled with those same 'toppings'. That would be a good reason to refer to them as 'toppings', as they would normally be put on pizza, but could also be put in the calzone.

Around here they call them fillings as far as I know. Maybe the places you go call them toppings because they're pizza toppings but you're putting them in the calzone.

That would bother me too. And probably throw me off, because I would expect to hear fillings, and so I would think maybe they misunderstood me and think Im ordering a pizza.

Yes, they are called fillings here. Like pie fillings.
