Abstract.
17 yrs ago, 9 mos ago - Sunday 10/26/03 - 1:32:12 PM EST (GMT-5)
representational. I do NOT understand why anyone would like abstract.
17 yrs ago, 9 mos ago - Sunday 10/26/03 - 1:37:00 PM EST (GMT-5)
Because you see it and give your own meaning to it. Sometimes, abstract art reminds me of things that are important to me, and it just appeals.

As far as painting is concerned, abstraction conforms to the limitations of canvas, pigments, and two-dimensionality.

Recognizable objects in painting, in a sense, do not fit the medium because of their three-dimensionality, a lot like fitting a square peg into a round slot. One could say that representational art in not a purist form of painting because the artist must overlook the true nature of his art in presenting a subject that cannot be rendered in its own true fullness.

Sculpture, on the other hand, is totally in the province of three-dimensionality. Although abstract scupture is common, representational scupture can be done without making any compromises to the medium.

^nice!

I love both but conceptual art is fascinating.
17 yrs ago, 9 mos ago - Sunday 10/26/03 - 2:13:58 PM EST (GMT-5)
Abstract art is crap.
17 yrs ago, 9 mos ago - Sunday 10/26/03 - 2:15:29 PM EST (GMT-5)
there are so many levels of abstract art, i'm sure even you, misophist, could find something you'd like.
17 yrs ago, 9 mos ago - Sunday 10/26/03 - 2:23:56 PM EST (GMT-5)
Artist have always been aware that what they presented initially is a lie, but that does not mean what they portray can not represent something.
17 yrs ago, 9 mos ago - Sunday 10/26/03 - 2:32:47 PM EST (GMT-5)
No, I don't think I could. I have seen a lot of this so called art, much of which does have aesthetic appeal in one form or another. But speaking as somone who has worked hard and logged the hours to try and develop a real talent I have no respect for the elitist crap that either requires no tlaent at all or is simply a private joke for critics and ass-holes.
17 yrs ago, 9 mos ago - Sunday 10/26/03 - 2:35:30 PM EST (GMT-5)
You're not supposed to image something concrete with abstract art Misophist, it's more directions of conveying feelings.
17 yrs ago, 9 mos ago - Sunday 10/26/03 - 2:39:54 PM EST (GMT-5)
no, it's more total crap. I could sh*t on a plate and evoke feelings of disgust from any dumb prick stupid enough to get close, and I'm sure some stupid bastard would probably think it was artistic, but the fact is it's just crap, just like all abstract art, and takes no talent, only an ass-hole.
17 yrs ago, 9 mos ago - Sunday 10/26/03 - 2:42:17 PM EST (GMT-5)
you are one closed-minded dude
17 yrs ago, 9 mos ago - Sunday 10/26/03 - 2:49:49 PM EST (GMT-5)
I like to think not, but perhaps. Either way I have more than once recieved complements on a piece that I knew was crap and I have never felt anything but scorn for people who try to read more into my work than I put into it. I refuse to believe that other artists have not had similar experiences and since I can't see the difference between those and the poor dicks who really think are making something worthwhile, and since I know that few, if any, others can either, I deduce that it is all crap.
17 yrs ago, 9 mos ago - Sunday 10/26/03 - 3:04:50 PM EST (GMT-5)
What? Art in general or your own art?
17 yrs ago, 9 mos ago - Sunday 10/26/03 - 3:07:36 PM EST (GMT-5)
All art which is not contrived to represent something at least moderately specific and or which cannot be distinguished by the talent of the artist.
17 yrs ago, 9 mos ago - Sunday 10/26/03 - 3:15:22 PM EST (GMT-5)
Is that not a bit narrow? Just the name "abstract art" points out the -lack- of specific representation.
17 yrs ago, 9 mos ago - Sunday 10/26/03 - 3:20:18 PM EST (GMT-5)
so just becasue you can put the words together lends credibility to the form?

Why am I narrow minded?

17 yrs ago, 9 mos ago - Sunday 10/26/03 - 3:26:19 PM EST (GMT-5)
I didn't mean -you- were narrow, a little misunderstaning there. I mean, that art does not have to be a specific representation of something to be called art.
17 yrs ago, 9 mos ago - Sunday 10/26/03 - 3:32:21 PM EST (GMT-5)
Either that or it has to be discernable by the talentof the artist, in my opinion, otherwise it's just a sunset or a flower or a stary night. Just something pretty to look at, nothing to qualify it as artistic.
17 yrs ago, 9 mos ago - Sunday 10/26/03 - 3:38:57 PM EST (GMT-5)
I'm sorry, but that I see as reducing an artistic piece to "merely" a beautiful sight. What about some meaning to the art itself?

I've seen a painting (it wasn't exactly what you could call a painting) where the artist had pissed on and taken a dump on the lower right corner of the painting, he had it glued to the piece.

I could only laugh when I saw it.

17 yrs ago, 9 mos ago - Sunday 10/26/03 - 3:40:54 PM EST (GMT-5)
Are you serious?
17 yrs ago, 9 mos ago - Sunday 10/26/03 - 3:43:22 PM EST (GMT-5)
Yes.
17 yrs ago, 9 mos ago - Sunday 10/26/03 - 3:46:24 PM EST (GMT-5)
Sadly I cannot remember the artist or the name of the painting, other than it is displayed in a danish book called "Literaturens Veje" around page 400-somthing.
17 yrs ago, 9 mos ago - Sunday 10/26/03 - 3:49:37 PM EST (GMT-5)
That is, with out doubt, the most fulfilling debate I have ever engaged in on TY, baring perhaps a very drawn-out conversation with wiseNsexy some time back. You could not have more decisively illustrated my own point, someone litterly can sh*t on a board and people really will think that it's art. Unbelievable.
