I do think that some people suffer from that. It would suck to be married to someone who had it.

Seems to, though there have been very few truly documented cases. Now they're calling it "disassociative identity disorder" or something like that. Too bad people are always confusing that with schizophrenia.

Yes, I believe it's real.

Read "When Rabbit Howls" and "Sybel".

18 yrs ago, 4 mos ago - Tuesday 12/23/03 - 8:02:48 PM EST (GMT-5)

18 yrs ago, 4 mos ago - Tuesday 12/23/03 - 8:04:41 PM EST (GMT-5)
I KNOW it's real.
18 yrs ago, 4 mos ago - Tuesday 12/23/03 - 8:08:43 PM EST (GMT-5)
Def real, i know a person who has it and its freaky
18 yrs ago, 4 mos ago - Tuesday 12/23/03 - 8:17:45 PM EST (GMT-5)
From what I've heard it's pretty much agreed by psychiatrists that in the way most people think of it, it's not real.

But of course, you normal people with no education in psychiatry would know better than them.

18 yrs ago, 4 mos ago - Tuesday 12/23/03 - 8:20:30 PM EST (GMT-5)
Then why are there 20,000 results on google for "dissociative identity disorder" many sponsored by health clinics and psychiatrists? Why is it listed in the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders-IV?
18 yrs ago, 4 mos ago - Tuesday 12/23/03 - 8:23:28 PM EST (GMT-5)
Because there is something like it, but it's not like the fight club 2 different people kind of thing. And it is pretty rare, so I find it highly unlikely that half of the people who have posted here know someone with it.
18 yrs ago, 4 mos ago - Tuesday 12/23/03 - 8:26:41 PM EST (GMT-5)
That I agree with.
18 yrs ago, 4 mos ago - Tuesday 12/23/03 - 8:30:01 PM EST (GMT-5)
Yes, I do. I know someone who has it.

No, you don't!

Yes, I do! Piss off!

All joking aside. It's real.

Yeah, I guess

what do i know, im not a doctor

Depends on what you mean. Symptoms that seem to point to something like 2 different people in one body are known to exist.

I don't think this indicates that two completely distinct personalities necessarily exist in that body. One person, with a mental disorder.

I would think that this would currently fall more under the bounds of psychology than psychiatry. However, maybe they've gone farther than I thought with diagnosing or curing it.

No, Multiple Personality Disorder (MPD) is not the same thing as being schizophrnic or being bipolar. MPD is a real disease and a lot of times they have more than 2 personalities. MPD is caused by a bunch of things. A lot of times it's caused by a stress overload. Each of the different personalities are their own distinct personalities. If a 23-year-old woman has it then her other personalities could range from a 50-year-old man to a 6-year-old child.

^^^ correct.
MPD is VERY real, and people who doubt whether or not these disorders exsist have obviously never met anyone with them or read up on the disorders themselves, and therefore whould keep their uninformed, bias opinions to themselves.

Bipolar? No. Bipolar disorder is something different.

And it's absolutely real.
It's most common in those who were severely abused as children.

16 yrs ago, 1 mos ago - Monday 3/27/06 - 8:45:22 PM EST (GMT-5)
Yes, I believe it's real - but not as common as people would think
15 yrs ago, 9 mos ago - Tuesday 7/25/06 - 7:51:06 PM EST (GMT-5)
I once dated a man who's roommate had this disorder...and it was very surreal. I could tell which personality was evident more by the way his cats treated him, than by talking to him.

He had three and eventually, due to the help of the cats, I could tell fairly quicky wether to say Hi, or to go upstairs and mmob.

I've never met someone with it, but I do not doubt it's real. I know from my own experience what the mind can do.
15 yrs ago, 5 mos ago - Monday 12/4/06 - 10:56:00 PM EST (GMT-5)
i think it makes existence a little more interesting to believe two (or more) seperate personalities can exist within a single body. It would be intriguing to understand better, however...
15 yrs ago, 5 mos ago - Monday 12/4/06 - 11:01:33 PM EST (GMT-5)
One of my selves thinks so, the other one does not.
