She refused to speak with the media in the after match press conference’s claiming it was damaging to her mental health. She was given a fine and possibly further penalties including possibly being barred from all of the major tournaments.

The press conference is important for the broadcasters and sports media. Can’t pretend your professional status is anything more than construct of media companies without which she would be making significantly less money.

I've got mixed feelings on this.

Part of me thinks that dealing with the press is part of the mental toughness that professional athletics requires.

The other part thinks that the press sometimes to oversteps boundaries and asks stupid and personal questions that players shouldn't have to deal with.

I think it’s particularly a relevant stance due to the current role of social media but I do think that people think she shouldn’t be turning her role as an athlete into a media stunt.

I think ultimately her trying to make a media statement like this just feeds into the viral celebrity mentality that’s more the root of the problem.

I still like Osaka but I respect the tournament’s response to this.

She should get some mentoring from F1 driver Mika Hakkinen.

When a reporter tried to get some mileage out of the fact that Hakkinen did not attend a presentation to Micheal Shumacher by Pele at the Brazilian Grand Prix, he explained "I was taking a sh*t"

I think players should have the right to say "That's part of my personal life and none of your damn business". Enough athletes do so, then hopefully reporters stick to the issues pertinent to the sporting event.

if it's not related to the game they do have the right not to comment. however, withdrawing altogether from an event is something i also have mixed feelings on. if they ask me "how will you beat opponent X" then that's fine but please no questions about my personal life or my political views, save that for another time.

Some players seem to mix political views with the sport- - if a player wears a BLM mask (which Osaka did at the US Open), I think that it's probably fair for the press to ask about it.

I'm not really a fan of reporters giving athletes and celebrities a forum for their political beliefs whether I agree with the view expressed or not.

Serena is into the round of 16. Osaka has stopped her from breaking Margaret Court’s record in a few tournaments.

There’s a pretty good match on the Tennis channel at the moment. Crucial moment in the match at least. A few good games at least.

Plus both the ladies playing are fairly attractive

I’m going to miss it but the third set is just starting.

Two young players fighting to make a name for themselves. It’s a good match.

They’re not televising the Federer match for some reason.

They are televising it on tennis channel now.

I should be able to watch all of this semifinal though.

My older son qualified for the HS state tournament. He will not be holding a press conference or speak to the media.

one of my players was interviewed after a game three years ago and he didn't really have much to say other than he worked hard and the team worked hard.

athletes can do what they want but the press shouldn't be surprised if they're not going to dive into their life story, IMO.

She should do press conferences like a politician. No matter what the question is just talk about what you want to talk about
